The Launch
A Moment Frozen in Time
In 1992, while in Greece, I was a proud and impulsive 19-year-old determined to prove my worth at sea. What should have been a routine sea trial for a refitted tall ship’s launch became the moment that would define me forever. For decades, I have told the story of how my small boat veered helplessly toward a massive U.S. aircraft carrier. After 22 years as a filmmaker, being able to finally translate this memory into a cinematic film has been an absolute dream.

The Vision and the Risk
The heart of this story isn't just the near-disaster; it’s the emotional arc of pride turning into panic and friendship being tested under extreme pressure. I chose a wide 21:9 aspect ratio to capture the cinematic scope of the Aegean and to emphasize the terrifying contrast between my small civilian boat and the overwhelming mass of a warship. My goal was to see if AI could convincingly portray these complex human emotions and sustain a high-tension narrative.
Recreating 1992 with Precision
Authenticity was essential to grounding the film’s realism, so I dedicated significant time to researching period accurate details. Every element, from the specific cut of the clothing to the naval uniforms and the vintage cars of the era, was carefully refined through iterative prompting. Using Nano Banana Pro and Freepik, I selected specific camera types, lenses, and film stocks to ensure the visual language felt like a true piece of 90s cinema.

Harnessing the Power of AI Tools
To bring the sea to life, I utilized Kling 3.0 and Kling motion control to generate high-fidelity video sequences. While maintaining character consistency across every shot remains a challenge in the current AI landscape, the technology demonstrated a remarkable ability to capture facial expressions and physical tension. This allowed me to recreate the disorientation and terror of being thrown overboard as thousands of tons of steel closed in.
Building the Atmosphere
The immersion of the film was significantly elevated by a deep focus on sound and score. I used Suno to compose a score that provided both emotional depth and escalating suspense, while environmental soundscapes were crafted using ElevenLabs and Kling. Despite the current hurdles with vocal consistency in AI dialogue, these tools allowed me to produce cinematic tension at a fraction of the cost of traditional production.

Completion and the Global Stage
After seven weeks of production and a final edit in DaVinci Resolve, the project is complete. This journey has reinforced my belief that AI is not a shortcut, but a powerful new filmmaking language that can transform personal history into a fully realized experience. I am incredibly happy to have finished this tribute to my younger self, and I am now excited to be submitting it to AI film festivals all around the world.
